Marine Radar Buying Guide: Radome vs Open Array and Solid-State vs Magnetron

Marine radar supports situational awareness when darkness, fog, rain or distance makes visual observation difficult. It can reveal coastlines, navigation marks, vessels, weather cells and other reflective targets. Choosing a radar means balancing antenna size, short-range detail, long-range detection, available power, mounting space and chartplotter compatibility.

Quick answer: a compact solid-state radome suits many sailboats and small-to-midsize powerboats. An open array is normally considered when target separation and longer-range performance matter more than size, windage, power consumption and cost.

Garmin’s technical guidance explains that a larger antenna can create a narrower horizontal beam, improving angular resolution and separation between nearby targets. A radome remains the practical choice where a large spinning antenna cannot be mounted safely.

Solid-state vs magnetron radar

Solid-state radar

Solid-state systems generally offer rapid startup, low power demand and strong close-range performance. Many use pulse-compression and Doppler processing to help identify moving targets. Feature names differ by manufacturer, so compare the actual tracking, overlay and target-highlighting capability of each model.

Magnetron radar

Magnetron transmitters are established technology and remain available across many commercial and recreational radar ranges. Higher-output models may be selected for long-range detection, but output power alone does not determine image quality. Antenna size, beamwidth, processing, installation and operator adjustment all matter.

How much radar range do you need?

Advertised maximum range should not be the only buying criterion. Radar horizon is affected by scanner height and target height, so a very long nominal range does not mean every small target can be detected at that distance. For collision awareness, clean short- and medium-range presentation may be more valuable than the largest published number.

Offshore anglers looking for birds may prioritize antenna gain and specialized bird modes. Coastal cruisers may focus on weather, traffic and navigation marks. Sailboats at anchor may value low power use and timed-transmit functions.

Compatibility with your chartplotter

Most current marine radars display through a compatible chartplotter or multifunction display. Compatibility is not universal. Confirm:

  • Supported chartplotter family and minimum software version
  • Required Ethernet or proprietary network cable
  • Power supply, fuse and cable-run limits
  • Heading-sensor requirements for overlay or target tracking
  • Whether a pedestal, array, cable and mounting hardware are included

A radar from one manufacturer should not be assumed to operate with another manufacturer’s display, even if the physical network connector appears similar.

Mounting and installation considerations

Radar installation directly affects performance and safety. The scanner needs a strong, level mounting surface with the clearest possible view. Masts, hardtops, lights and other structures can create shadow sectors or false echoes. The beam must be kept away from people and installed according to the manufacturer’s minimum safe distances.

Also check compass-safe distance, cable routing, water ingress protection, antenna rotation clearance and access for service. Because installation involves RF safety, structure, electrical protection and network commissioning, professional installation is strongly recommended.

Why heading data matters for radar overlay

A chartplotter can know course over ground from GPS while the boat is moving, but radar overlay and target-tracking functions may require a compatible heading sensor. Heading describes the direction the bow points; course over ground describes the direction the vessel actually travels. Wind, current and low speed can make those values different.

Confirm the update rate and network compatibility required by the chartplotter and radar manufacturer. A basic electronic compass may be adequate for one installation, while advanced target tracking or autopilot integration may call for a higher-performance heading source. The sensor also needs a location away from magnetic interference. Test overlay alignment and heading accuracy during commissioning rather than assuming a successful network connection proves correct calibration.

Is open-array radar always better?

No. It generally offers narrower beamwidth and stronger target separation, but a radome may be the better fit for a smaller vessel, sailboat, battery-conscious installation or restricted mounting area.

Does higher radar power always mean a better image?

No. Antenna size, signal processing, mounting, display settings and operating conditions all influence performance.

Can marine radar see through rain?

Radar can detect targets in rain, but precipitation also produces returns. Rain-clutter controls and operator experience are important for interpreting the display.

Can I install radar myself?

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly. Professional installation is recommended because incorrect placement, wiring or RF safety clearance can reduce performance or create hazards.
