Trolling Motor Battery Size and Runtime Guide

Select battery voltage, count and amp-hour capacity for a trolling motor, then estimate realistic runtime and plan safe wiring and charging.

Trolling motor battery size involves three separate numbers: system voltage, the number of batteries and each battery’s usable amp-hour capacity. Thrust alone does not tell you runtime, because actual current changes with speed, load, wind and water conditions.

Quick answer: match the motor’s required voltage exactly, use one correctly connected 12-volt battery for each 12 volts in a conventional series bank, and select enough usable amp-hours for the expected current and reserve.

Some systems use purpose-built lithium batteries at the full bank voltage. Follow the motor and battery manufacturer’s approved configuration rather than mixing approaches.

Amp-hours and runtime

A basic estimate divides usable amp-hours by current draw in amps. A 100 Ah battery delivering 20 A would have a theoretical five-hour result, but real runtime is lower after accounting for recommended depth of discharge, battery age, temperature, wiring loss and changing load.

Do not use the motor’s maximum current for every minute unless full speed is realistic. A variable-speed motor may draw much less at lower settings, while wind, waves and a heavy hull increase demand.

A worked runtime estimate

Suppose a 12-volt motor averages 18 A during a mixed fishing day and the selected battery provides 80 Ah of permitted usable capacity. The planning result is about 4.4 hours before reserve: 80 divided by 18. It is not a promise because current changes continuously and the battery’s delivered capacity varies with age, temperature and discharge rate.

For a 24-volt bank made from two 12-volt 100 Ah batteries in series, system voltage doubles but the bank remains 100 Ah; it does not become 200 Ah. Energy is better compared in watt-hours: volts multiplied by amp-hours.

Series, parallel and dedicated banks

Series connections increase voltage while retaining the same amp-hour rating. Parallel connections retain voltage while adding capacity, but only when the battery manufacturer permits the arrangement. A 24- or 36-volt motor must never be connected to a lower-voltage bank or improvised mixed system. Label conductors and provide a disconnect method that matches the motor manual.

Charging-time planning

Divide the amp-hours that must be replaced by charger amps for a rough minimum, then allow extra time for charge taper and losses. A multi-bank charger should independently manage every battery in a conventional series bank. Verify its input voltage when the boat travels internationally.

Deep-cycle, not starting battery

Minn Kota advises using deep-cycle marine batteries and warns against using a cranking battery as the trolling-motor supply. Starting batteries are optimized for short high-current bursts, while trolling motors need repeated deeper discharge.

Battery capacity guidance

Minn Kota’s public guide lists 70–85 Ah as a “good” range, 85–110 Ah as “better” and 95–125 Ah as “best” for its 12-volt lead-acid examples, while recommending at least 110 Ah for best results. Treat those numbers as manufacturer-specific guidance, then check the exact motor and chosen battery chemistry.

Wiring and protection

  • Use cable gauge based on maximum current and round-trip conductor length.
  • Install the specified fuse or circuit breaker near the battery source.
  • Use marine-rated terminals, secure batteries and protect against short circuits.
  • Never mix old and new batteries or different capacities in a series bank unless explicitly approved.
  • Keep the trolling bank isolated from starting loads unless the system is designed otherwise.
  • Select a charger compatible with voltage, bank count and battery chemistry.

Can I use a car battery?

A starting battery is not designed for repeated deep-cycle trolling use. Choose a suitable deep-cycle marine battery.

Can different battery sizes be connected in series?

A series bank should normally use matched batteries of the same chemistry, capacity, age and state of charge, following manufacturer guidance.
