1. Read the control and error code

Record the code before cycling power. Check the exact model manual because identical symptoms can have different causes across control systems.

2. Confirm safe electrical supply

A breaker that trips repeatedly is a warning, not a reset challenge. Low shore voltage, undersized wiring, weak connections or generator instability can prevent startup. Voltage testing around energized equipment requires qualified personnel.

3. Check seawater flow

Most self-contained marine AC units use seawater to remove heat. Verify the seacock position, clean the strainer and look for a steady overboard discharge. Dometic lists obstructed seawater flow and an air-locked pump among common causes of no cooling.

4. Restore cabin airflow

Clean the return-air filter and remove blocked grilles or crushed ducting. Restricted airflow can reduce cooling and cause evaporator icing. Allow ice to thaw fully before retesting.

5. Inspect condensate drainage

Clear the pan and hose, remove sags or kinks and confirm the unit is level. Tighten hose clamps only as specified. Water near electrical equipment or an active seawater leak requires immediate shutdown.

6. Consider operating conditions

Very warm seawater, extreme cabin heat, open hatches or an undersized unit can reduce performance without a component failure. Dometic’s MCS manual notes that seawater temperature directly affects efficiency.

7. Check shared-pump systems

When multiple units share a pump, flow control, pump triggering and air locks can affect one or all cabins. Follow the designed sequencing and manifold arrangement.

8. Know when to stop

Call a technician for refrigerant loss, compressor faults, repeated electrical trips, burned wiring, seawater leaks, failed pumps or inaccessible duct and plumbing faults.

A repeatable diagnostic sequence

  1. Record display code, cabin temperature, seawater temperature and whether cooling ever starts.
  2. Verify the thermostat mode and set point.
  3. Observe fan airflow and overboard seawater discharge.
  4. With power isolated, inspect the filter, strainer, condensate path and visible connections.
  5. Restart once under the manual and record what changes.
  6. Stop if the breaker trips, water leaks, the pump runs dry or the fault returns.

Preventing repeat failures

Clean return-air filters and seawater strainers on a schedule suited to use. Inspect discharge flow at every startup, keep lockers from blocking return grilles and flush the seawater circuit only with an approved procedure. Exercise seacocks and check clamps during routine maintenance.
