The Garmin GPSMAP 86i is a handheld marine GPS and satellite communicator made for the place where fixed electronics cannot help: in the dinghy, on deck, in a ditch bag, or away from the boat. It combines marine navigation with Iridium satellite communication, a floating IPX7 housing, and physical keys that are easier to use with wet hands than a phone screen.

The 3-inch transflective color screen is small, but it is designed for outdoor visibility and low-power portable use. It holds 10,000 waypoints, 250 routes, and 250 saved tracks, giving it enough memory for real backup navigation. The internal lithium battery runs up to 35 hours in 10-minute tracking mode. Its satellite functions and sensors make it useful as emergency gear, but it does not replace a full-size helm chartplotter.

Who Is This For?

This marine handheld GPS communicator suits dinghies, kayaks, emergency ditch bags, small utility boats, and offshore crews wanting a portable backup. It is not a replacement for a large helm MFD, radar, or fishfinder.

Warranty & Support

The supplied specifications do not state a warranty term. Confirm current Garmin warranty coverage before purchase.

The GPSMAP 86i is the right tool when portability and backup communication matter more than screen size. It belongs in a ditch bag or on a tender where a fixed MFD cannot go. The trade-off is a small display and handheld interface, so use it alongside a fixed chartplotter for normal helm navigation, not in place of one.
