The Garmin GPSMAP 8616 is for the helm where a 12-inch screen has become too small, but a full glass bridge display would be excessive. This 16-inch Garmin chartplotter comes with Garmin Navionics+ mapping and gives offshore fishing boats, large center consoles, and cruisers a clear place to run charts, radar, cameras, and engine data. It does not include built-in sonar.

Its 1920 x 1080 IPS screen gives chart labels and split pages more breathing room, especially when the boat is running several networked systems at once. At 1000 nits, it is intended for daylight helm use. Two Garmin Marine Network ports, HDMI input/output, USB-C, NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183, and J1939 allow the display to sit at the center of a connected Garmin installation. For fishfinding, add compatible GSD or GCV network sonar hardware and a transducer selected for the hull.

Who Is This For?

This 16-inch marine chartplotter suits offshore fishing boats, large center consoles, commercial-style helms, and cruisers with a planned Garmin network. It is not right for a compact dash or for buyers who need a self-contained fishfinder, since sonar requires external GSD or GCV modules.

Warranty & Support

Garmin provides a 2-year standard warranty. The supplied specifications do not state exclusions or service procedures.

The GPSMAP 8616 is a strong choice for a large Garmin navigation helm where Garmin Navionics+ mapping is already part of the plan. It offers considerably more working space than a 12-inch display without the major cutout of a 22-inch bridge screen. The trade-off is external sonar hardware. Choose it for a connected vessel system, not for a transducer-included fishing package.
