B&G Hydraulic Ram Type 1 – 12V

Sailing yachts up to 22,000 lbs maintain steady rudder control through the B&G Hydraulic Ram Type 1 linear drive, which pushes 770 lbs of peak hydraulic thrust across a 250mm stroke in 12 seconds at 12V.

  • 770-lb thrust actuates rudder quadrants directly
  • Self-contained hydraulic ram eliminates external hose plumbing
  • 12-second stroke speed ensures responsive wave correction
  • Zero-backlash linkage preserves positive rudder feel
  • Drives cruising sailboats up to 22000 lbs

The B&G T1 Pilot Ram 12V, SKU RAM-T1-12V, is a self-contained hydraulic linear autopilot drive for compatible mechanically steered sailing vessels. It connects directly to an independent tiller arm or steering quadrant and integrates its hydraulic pump, reservoir, and ram in one assembly, eliminating external hydraulic hoses between the drive components. This is a drive-only component and requires a compatible B&G or Simrad autopilot course computer, display, heading sensor, power circuit, feedback method where required, and correctly engineered steering linkage.

The 12V Type 1 ram is designed for sailboats and displacement vessels up to 12,000 kg, or 26,400 lb, and provides 350 kg, or 770 lb, peak thrust through a 250 mm stroke. It draws approximately 5A to 12A depending on steering load and is intended for use with compatible NAC-2, NAC-3, AC42, or H5000 pilot systems. Confirm steering geometry, vessel displacement, course-computer output capacity, and full manual-steering operation before purchase.

System Integration

This is not a complete autopilot system. Add a compatible B&G or Simrad course computer, controller or display, heading sensor, electrical supply, NMEA 2000 network where applicable, and physical rudder feedback if required by the selected steering system. Do not connect the ram to a low-current autopilot computer unable to support the drive’s motor and clutch load.

Correct drive selection depends on displacement, steering load, rudder torque, tiller-arm radius, required stroke, duty cycle, and mounting geometry. The self-contained hydraulic construction simplifies the drive assembly but does not remove the need for a properly designed mechanical linkage and structural mounting foundation.

Before Ordering

Confirm vessel displacement up to 26,400 lb, compatible mechanical steering, independent tiller arm or quadrant, sufficient 250 mm stroke clearance, structural mounting strength, compatible NAC-2, NAC-3, AC42, or H5000 course computer, 12V supply, required drive-current capacity, feedback requirement, manual-steering access, and complete autopilot-system components before purchase.
