Integration
The MDA-5 requires a compatible VHF voice radio, suitable shared VHF antenna, correct MMSI/static vessel-data programming, and an MFD, chartplotter, computer, or mobile application to show AIS targets. It is not a VHF voice radio, radar, chartplotter, GPS display, EPIRB, or collision-avoidance guarantee.
Long-range Wi-Fi can provide more flexible mobile-device access, but its effective connection depends on vessel layout, antenna placement, interference, distance, device compatibility, and network security. AIS reception and transmission also depend on local VHF coverage and other vessels transmitting accurate data.
